The Birth of a Carved Candle: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Welcome to the world of YScandles! We are excited to tell you and show you exactly how every unique carved candle is created. You will see that there are no hidden tricks here. Anyone with the desire can try making their own candle at a masterclass or even learn all the professional secrets to become a certified candle master.

(Фото 1: Основа-звезда) To create a carved candle, we need a foundation core like this one. It can be in the shape of a 6-pointed or 8-pointed star. We cast these bases from a specific mixture of paraffin and stearin. This composition ensures the candle burns evenly and brightly. We tie the base directly by its wick to a special dipping hook.

(Фото 2: Оборудование/Ванна) The multi-colored candle is the result of repeatedly dipping the base into hot, liquid paraffin wax. To maintain the precise temperature needed, we use specialized equipment designed and developed by us.

Tip: The quality of your equipment is crucial. At YSCANDLES, we use our own custom-manufactured dipping vats to ensure perfect layers.

Before dipping, we stir the wax with bamboo sticks to dissolve any clumps, remove the crust formed on the surface, and ensure the dye is evenly distributed.

Let the dipping begin! :) One immersion equals one layer. The more layers applied, the wider that color stripe will appear in the final cut.

After every dip in the hot wax, we must submerge the future candle into cold water to "set" the new paraffin layer.

(Фото 5: Желто-зеленая свеча) If the design requires colors not to blend, each color is finished with a layer of white paraffin—it won't be visible in the cross-section later. We needed to achieve a light green color here, so the yellow blank was dipped immediately into the green paraffin. As you can see, the candle has already noticeably "fattened up."

And here is the color we have achieved so far.

(Фото 7: Перекрытие белым) We dip the blank into the desired colors several more times. The top layer of our candle will be red, so we need to thoroughly "cover" the other colors with white first, which is what we are doing here.

(Фото 8: Прорезание бороздок) Candles come in different sizes, and each requires a specific number of layers, so you need to accurately calculate how many times to dip the blank into each color. Some time before the dipping finishes, we cut these grooves. This ensures the candle doesn't turn into a smooth, featureless cylinder. As you can see, even several layers of white still haven't completely covered the green color yet.

Finally, the required opaque white color is achieved.

A few more immersions in the paraffin, and here is the result.

(Фото 11: Обрезка дна) Here begins the second and most critical part—carving the candle. While the paraffin is soft, it can be cut and bent in any way. The master has approximately 20 minutes before it completely hardens. The candle must be finished within this time. To start, we cut the excess off the bottom. It is a pity, but these beautiful "stalactites" have to be thrown away—they are not suitable for recycling.

And here is our master, Ekaterina. :)

She also hates throwing away scraps, so—voilà!—they are turned into this cute little mini-candle.

(Фото 14: Первый надрез) The first cut is made. All elements are carved from the bottom upwards. From the sidelines, cutting a petal of the required thickness seems easy, but as soon as you try it yourself, it turns out the knife behaves however it wants. You need a little practice to get the feel for it.

And now the first row of curls is ready. Proceeding to the next row. Cut and twist.

Done! And more curls again. Now the light green color has appeared. :)

(Фото 17: Сложные элементы) Further along, it gets a bit more complicated. Sometimes cut petals might fall off or refuse to stand in place, but any error is fixable, and the result is beautiful regardless. :)

(Фото 18: Верхушка) There is a set of basic elements that a master can combine however they like. There are also "traditional" candle shapes where the entire sequence of actions is predefined. In our case, the master decides how the candle will look. We have reached the top of the candle.

But that's not all! Using a special loop-shaped knife, we carve thick strips in the recesses, similar to the grooves we made during the preparatory stage.

They turn into cute "snails" and spirals.

We remove the candle from the crossbar and use a special round knife to cut the top down to the core so that the candle looks neat and burns better.

It remains only to tie the label to the wick. The master is pleased. :)

(Фото 23: Финальное фото свечи) After this, the candle is additionally covered with lacquer, which helps to better fasten all the elements together and gives the candle a brilliant shine. Our candle actually left the display shelf in 10 minutes, without even having time to dip into the lacquer! :)

The burning time of such a candle is about 20 hours.

As you can see, anyone can learn the candle business; you just need the desire. :)
